Discord Age Verification and NSFW Servers: What Changed on September 22, 2026
On September 22, 2026 Discord began rolling out age assurance worldwide. If you use NSFW Discord servers, this is the change that decides whether age-restricted channels open for you. Here is what Discord actually announced, sourced from its own blog and help pages, without the rumours.

What Discord announced
In a post titled “Safer for Teens, Same Discord for Adults”, Discord CTO and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy announced that Discord would automatically place accounts into an age group using account signals, rolling out over that week (Discord blog, Sept 22, 2026). Discord said more than 90% of users won’t be asked to confirm their age. It also said that if you’re in the adult age group, nothing changes.
This follows a plan Discord first announced in February 2026 and then delayed after user backlash. Discord promised to return in the second half of the year with more verification options, a public vendor list and a published methodology (Discord blog, Feb 2026). The September launch is that follow-through. Discord says it had already launched age assurance in places that require it by law, including Texas and Brazil. Its estimation model isn’t currently used in the UK or Australia, which have their own rules.
The three age groups
- Adult Age Group (18+). Full access, including age-restricted servers, channels and settings.
- Teen Age Group (13–17). Age-restricted servers, channels and bot commands are blocked, sensitive images are blurred or blocked, and messages from non-friends go to a requests inbox.
- Unconfirmed. Discord doesn’t have enough signal yet. You get teen-style protections for adult content until you confirm. New accounts start here.
You can see yours under User Settings → Account Status. Discord says your age group isn’t shown on your profile or visible to other server members.
What it means for NSFW Discord servers
Discord’s help centre states that only accounts in the adult age group can enter or join servers marked age-restricted, and that includes the server’s owners and moderators (Discord Help Center). In practice:
- If you’re already in the adult group, NSFW Discord servers work exactly as before.
- If you’re Teen or Unconfirmed, you keep your account, friends, DMs and normal servers, but age-restricted spaces stay locked until you confirm you’re an adult.
- Servers can’t see your age group or your verification details. They only see whether you were allowed in.
- Separate iPhone rules still apply. See our NSFW Discord on iPhone fix.
Discord also added spoiler channels earlier in 2026, so servers that only age-gated channels for spoilers or heavy topics no longer have to. Real NSFW Discord communities still use age-restricted channels, as Discord’s Community Guidelines require.
How Discord estimates your age
Discord says its model looks at patterns such as the communities, servers and games you’re connected to, how active you are and how old your account is. It says it doesn’t look at your messages, calls or other content, and no single server decides your age group. Discord admits the model will make mistakes, which is why you can confirm manually at any time. Discord has also published a separate technical post on the methodology.
Ways to confirm you’re an adult
If you’re an adult who wasn’t placed in the adult group, go to User Settings → Account Status. Depending on your region and device, Discord lists these methods (Discord blog; Discord vendors and data page):
- Credit card. The vendor k-ID routes your card to Stripe to confirm it belongs to an adult. A small temporary charge may be refunded within 14 business days.
- Apple App Store or Google Play. These share your age range, not your birthdate.
- Google Wallet. Uses a passport-based ID pass. Currently limited to passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US.
- Video selfie. Facial age estimation runs on your device.
- ID scan. Scans your ID plus a selfie, both deleted after the check.
- AgeKey. A reusable age credential that works across services.
If you confirmed your age before, Discord says it carries over and you won’t be asked again.
What happens to your data
Discord says it receives only an age signal, such as your age group and the method used, and never your name, ID, card or face scan. Vendors must delete what you submit once the check is done and can’t use it for ads or model training (Discord: Age Assurance Vendors, Methods, and Your Data). Discord also says it has retired the manual customer-service review process linked to the September 2025 data breach, with any manual reviews now handled by k-ID. Whether that is enough is your call. The non-biometric options exist if you’d rather not use a selfie or ID.
Watch for fake “verification”
The rollout gives scammers a new script. Discord verifies age only inside the app under Account Status. A server, bot or DM that asks you to scan a QR code, log in on another site or send an ID photo to “verify for NSFW” is not Discord. Our NSFW Discord safety checklist covers the common traps.

Discord age verification: FAQ
Does Discord require age verification for NSFW servers now?
Only accounts in Discord’s adult age group can open age-restricted servers. Since September 22, 2026 Discord places most accounts in an age group automatically, and more than 90% of users won’t be asked to confirm. You only need to verify if you’re not already in the adult group.
How do I check my Discord age group?
Go to User Settings → Account Status. It shows Adult Age Group, Teen Age Group or Unconfirmed. Other users can’t see it.
Can I verify my age on Discord without ID or a selfie?
Yes, depending on region and device. Discord offers a credit card check, Apple App Store or Google Play age range sharing, Google Wallet and AgeKey alongside the selfie and ID options.
Does Discord store my ID or face scan?
Discord says no. It receives only an age signal, and its vendors must delete submitted data once the check is complete. Facial age estimation runs on your device.
Will NSFW Discord servers see my age verification details?
No. Discord says your age group isn’t shown on your profile or to server members, and servers don’t receive your verification data.
