How to Make an NSFW Discord Server (Without Getting It Taken Down)
92,900+ members (Oct 24, 2026) · free · strictly 18+ · How to join in 3 steps
Discord allows NSFW servers, with conditions. The owner and moderators must be adults, every explicit channel needs Discord’s age-restricted label, and nothing explicit can show outside the server. Get those wrong and Discord can age-restrict the whole server for you, remove content or take the server down. This checklist walks through the setup in the order we’d do it, using Discord’s own Help Center and policy pages. The most important call: age-restrict individual channels, not the whole server, so iPhone members can still join.
If you’re a member trying to see NSFW content rather than host it, you want how to turn on NSFW on Discord instead. For the policy itself, see Discord’s NSFW rules in plain English.

The setup checklist
- Make sure you and every moderator are 18+ and in Discord’s adult age group (User Settings → Account Status). Only adult accounts can enter age-restricted servers, owners and moderators included.
- Create the server with a clean name, icon and invite background. These are visible outside the server, so they can’t be explicit.
- Build a front door: a read-only rules channel and a welcome channel that everyone can see.
- Mark every channel with explicit content as an Age-Restricted Channel (Edit Channel → Overview, desktop or browser).
- Leave the whole server un-restricted. Don’t turn on the server-wide Age-Restricted Server setting: it locks iPhone members out of the server in the iOS app and stalls growth. Keep explicit content in age-restricted channels instead.
- Set the safety basics: a verification level, the explicit image filter for your non-adult channels, and AutoMod.
- Add only the bots you need, with the fewest permissions, and keep 18+ commands in age-restricted channels.
- Write rules you’ll actually enforce, appoint adult moderators, and use Discord’s in-app reporting for serious violations.
What Discord requires before you start
Discord’s Sexual Content Policy Explainer says servers can host sexually explicit content as long as it doesn’t break Discord’s policies, the owner and moderators are all over 18, and every channel hosting it carries an age-restricted label. It also lists the places explicit content can never go:
- Server surfaces visible to non-members: the server name, icon, invite link and invite background.
- Things that travel: stickers and emoji, which can be used elsewhere on Discord.
- Profiles: usernames, display names, avatars, banners and About Me sections. Server profiles are the exception only in a server that is entirely age-gated.
Some content is banned even in an 18+ server, including anything sexualising minors, non-consensual content and sexual content likely to lead to serious bodily harm. Discord has a zero-tolerance policy on child sexual exploitation, grooming and sextortion. Our summary of what’s banned in 18+ spaces has the full list, and Rule 9 of the Community Guidelines is the source.
1. Create the server and its front door
- Click the + at the bottom of your server list, choose Create My Own and give the server a name and icon that would be fine on a billboard. Everything adult lives inside.
- Create a #rules channel. In its permissions, let @everyone view it and read history but not send messages.
- Create a #welcome or #start-here channel that explains what the server is, what’s allowed and how to get access.
- Group the adult channels in their own category so you can manage their permissions and labels together.
A common pattern is a “Member” role that unlocks the main categories once someone has read the rules. That’s useful for keeping spam accounts out of the busy channels, but it is not age verification. Discord’s own age group check is what decides who can open age-restricted servers and channels (see how Discord’s age verification works). Never ask members for ID photos, selfies or QR scans yourself: Discord only confirms age inside its own app, and a server collecting IDs is exactly what scammers do.
2. Age-restrict channels, not the whole server
| Setting | Where | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Age-Restricted Channel | Edit Channel cog → Overview. Desktop or browser only | Use it on every channel where explicit content can be posted |
| Age-Restricted Server | Server Settings → Access (desktop/browser) or Server Settings → Moderation (mobile) | Avoid it. It locks iPhone members out of the server in the iOS app and stalls growth |
- Channels: Discord says the Age-Restricted Channel toggle can only be set on desktop or in a browser (Discord Help Center). Members see a one-time notice before they enter.
- Why not the whole server: an age-restricted server doesn’t show in the iPhone and iPad app until each member turns on an iOS opt-in from desktop or the web, and Discord blocks a subset of explicit servers on iOS entirely (Discord: What are Age-Restricted Servers?). Plenty of people find and join servers from their phone, so a server-wide gate locks those members out and stalls growth. With age-restricted channels, the server itself stays joinable on every device while explicit content stays behind Discord’s 18+ gate.
- Label every explicit channel. Discord requires an age-restricted label on each channel with explicit content, whatever else you do.
- Keep the server genuinely mixed. Discord says servers organised around 18+ themes, or where most content is 18+, should be age-restricted, and it marks qualifying servers itself, telling the owner through a system message. Keep your welcome, rules, general chat and other non-explicit channels active and clean. If Discord applies the designation and you think it’s a mistake, the owner can appeal to Trust & Safety (the “NSFW Server Owner Appeals” option) with the server ID and an explanation.
Since September 22, 2026, only accounts in the adult age group can join or view age-restricted servers and channels (Discord blog). Many adults are placed there automatically; members who aren’t can confirm their age in Discord. You don’t have to do anything extra as the owner.
3. Set the safety basics
Verification level
Verification levels decide what an account needs before it can send messages or join voice in your server (Discord: Verification Levels):
| Level | Requirement |
|---|---|
| None | No checks |
| Low | Verified email |
| Medium | Verified email, account older than 5 minutes |
| High | Medium, plus a member of the server for more than 10 minutes |
| Highest | High, plus a verified phone number |
A verified phone number satisfies every level. Find it under Server Settings → Safety Setup (Community servers: Safety Setup → DM and Spam Protection) or Server Settings → Moderation on mobile. For a public adult server, Medium or High slows down spam accounts and raids without locking out real members.
Explicit image filter
The explicit image filter blocks messages that may contain explicit images in channels that are not age-restricted; age-restricted channels are exempt (Discord: Safer Messaging). That makes it a useful safety net for an adult server: your 18+ channels work normally, and explicit images can’t land in #welcome or general chat by mistake. You can apply it to all members or only members without roles, under Server Settings → Safety Setup. Community servers start on the strictest setting.
AutoMod
AutoMod is in Server Settings → AutoMod and can only be edited on desktop (Discord: AutoMod FAQ). The rules that matter most for an adult server:
- Block Spam Content catches “free Nitro” scams and invite spam.
- Block Mention Spam stops mass pings during raids.
- Custom keywords let you block terms you never want posted, such as words linked to minors or scam phrases, with an alert to a private mod channel.
- Block words in member profile names (under Safety Setup) keeps explicit or abusive usernames out of the member list.
The ready-made “Sexual Content” word list is built for family-friendly servers. In an adult server, either skip it or exempt your age-restricted channels.
4. Bots and apps in an NSFW server
- 18+ commands stay in 18+ places. Discord lets apps flag commands as age-restricted. Adults can use them only in an age-restricted channel, or in a DM with the app after turning on age-restricted commands in User Settings (Discord developer docs).
- App Directory apps are SFW. Discord says apps with discovery enabled, which is required to appear in the App Directory, can’t contain age-restricted commands or content. An adult bot will usually be added from its own site.
- You’re responsible for what a bot posts. If a bot pulls content from other sites, check its sources and filters before turning it on; banned content posted by a bot is still banned content in your server.
- Least privilege. Don’t give a bot Administrator. Grant only the permissions it needs, and only in the channels it uses.
- Be wary of “verification” bots that ask for ID or a QR scan. That isn’t Discord, and it puts your members’ accounts at risk; see our NSFW Discord safety checklist.
5. What your members see on each device
Adults can join age-restricted servers on desktop, the web and Android. iPhone users can join NSFW Discord servers too, with two iOS-only rules from Discord (Help Center):
- For servers marked age-restricted, members on iOS first opt in to age-restricted content from desktop or the web, then the server shows in the app.
- A subset of age-restricted servers focused specifically on explicit pornographic content is blocked in the iOS app. iPhone members use those on desktop or on discord.com in Safari.
Those rules are the main reason to age-restrict channels rather than the whole server: a server without the server-wide setting stays visible and joinable in the iPhone app.
Pin a short note in #welcome that links members to the iPhone fix and the troubleshooting table; it saves your moderators answering the same question all day.
6. Getting found without breaking rules
- Server Discovery is off the table. Discord’s Discovery Guidelines keep sexual content out of Discord’s public features, so adult servers aren’t listed there.
- Use directories that accept NSFW listings. Our comparison of NSFW Discord directories covers which ones allow adult servers and how they handle dead invites.
- Keep one stable invite. Expired invites are the top reason people give up on a server. Use a non-expiring invite or a vanity URL, and test it with our Discord invite checker.
- Don’t spam. Mass DMs and invite spam break Discord’s rules and get accounts actioned. Give people a reason to stay instead: active chat, real moderators and something a repost server can’t copy.
Or skip the setup
Running an adult server well is real work: moderation every day, keeping invites alive, and keeping up with Discord’s policy changes. If you just want somewhere active to be, WRVTHFUL is a free, strictly 18+ NSFW Discord server with 92,900+ members as of Oct 24, 2026. Its adult channels are age-restricted, it’s run by adult moderators, and independent Stripchat creators post live alerts when they go on. It joins from desktop, web, Android and the iPhone app. If you’re comparing, here’s what makes an NSFW Discord server worth joining, or browse our checked list of porn Discord servers.

Making an NSFW Discord server: FAQ
Can you make an NSFW Discord server?
Yes. Discord lets adults run servers with sexually explicit content as long as the owner and every moderator are 18 or older, every channel with explicit content is marked age-restricted, nothing explicit appears on public surfaces such as the server name, icon, invite background, emoji or stickers, and the content itself doesn’t break Discord’s policies.
How do I make my Discord server 18+?
Age-restrict the channels, not the server. On desktop or in a browser, open Edit Channel → Overview on each channel with explicit content and turn on Age-Restricted Channel; Discord says this can only be set on desktop or in a browser. Don’t turn on the server-wide Age-Restricted Server setting: it locks iPhone members out of the server in the iOS app and stalls growth.
Should I mark the whole server age-restricted?
No. An age-restricted server is hidden in the iPhone and iPad app until each member turns on an iOS opt-in from desktop or the web, and Discord blocks a subset of explicit servers on iOS entirely, so a server-wide gate locks iPhone members out and stalls growth. Age-restrict individual channels instead. Discord says servers organised around 18+ themes, or where most content is 18+, should carry the server designation and it can apply it itself, so keep your welcome, rules and general channels active and genuinely general.
Can NSFW Discord servers be listed in Server Discovery?
No. Discord’s Discovery Guidelines keep sexual content out of public features, so adult servers aren’t listed in Server Discovery. Owners rely on directories that accept NSFW listings, a stable invite link and word of mouth instead.
Can I use a bot to verify members are 18+?
A bot can give members a role after they accept your rules, but that isn’t age verification. Discord’s own age group check is what controls access to age-restricted servers and channels. Don’t collect ID photos or selfies yourself; Discord only confirms age inside its own app.
Can NSFW bots post in any channel?
No. Commands that apps mark as age-restricted can only be used by adults in an age-restricted channel, or in a DM with the app after the user enables age-restricted commands in User Settings. Apps listed in Discord’s App Directory can’t contain age-restricted commands at all.
